02 Mar Health Food Market Survey
Realizing Hong Kong is lacking information of the health food market, the Association has commissioned the Social Sciences Research Centre of the University of Hong Kong to conduct a health food market survey in September 2008. 1062 Hong Kong residents were successfully interviewed via telephone calls. Response rate was 69.3%. The survey discovered 34.8% respondents took health food during the six months prior to the survey, among which the majority are females, managerial staff /employers, income above 20,000 and of higher education background. Vitamins or minerals are most popular (22.4%), followed by health supplements (13.4%), then Chinese dietary supplements (11.9%) and vegetable/fruit supplements (5.9%). It also revealed that those who have taken health food on average took 1.9 types per day. The survey has found out Over 70% respondents indicated that product safety is very important and nearly 60% think that product quality is very important. From the data analysis, it is estimated about 2 million residents are taking health food products regularly. The annual sales is around HK$10 billion.
