IADSA Alert – Omega 3 Fatty acids

Two new studies on Omega-3 Fatty Acids have been published in JAMA Internal Medicine and Annals of Internal Medicine. We believe that these 2 articles will generate some negative media press if it is not already the case. These publications are: JAMA Internal Medicine“Effect of Long-Chain omega-3 Fatty Acids and Lutein + Zeaxanthin Supplements on Cardiovascular Outcomes.” According to the authors, dietary supplementation of long-chain ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids or macular xanthophylls in addition to daily intake of minerals and vitamins did not reduce the risk of CVD in elderly participants with age-related macular degeneration. http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1835351 Annals of Internal Medicine “Association of Dietary, Circulating, and Supplement Fatty Acids with Coronary Risk.” Findings shows that current evidence does not clearly support cardiovascular guidelines that encourage high consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and low consumption of total saturated fats. http://annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=1846638 Please find attached a statement from Duffy MacKay, CRN US commenting on the outcomes of these studies. This might be very useful if you are challenged at national/ regional level.
